Was the torch on the statue of liberty really ever changed to gold in the 80’s?
The current story is that in 1985, the original torch was removed and replaced and painted in 24-carat gold leaf. Some people however, don’t have a recent memory of the torch ever having changed from the original green color of the overall statue. Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, the statue’s sculptor, wanted the entire statue to be in gold apparently, but due to the tremendous expense and effort it would take those plans were scrapped.
A few youtube creators have created videos on this very topic. One in particular, Life Matrix, has created a few videos on the changes with the statue of liberty. An additional video on the positioning of the lady liberty’s foot is below the video on the torch mandela effect.
